Many organisations, taking SharePoint on for the first time, opt to go for a single server instance deployment of SharePoint. However, they find it easy to forget in the heat of getting a single SharePoint production environment deployed, that without defining a fully available topology that one may be creating a single point of failure scenario.

SharePoint Conference Full Farm Failover Demo – SPC11

At the SharePoint Conference in Anaheim was demoed using SQL Server “Denali” Always On to fail-over a 14.4 TB SharePoint content database to a secondary database server in 45 seconds. Very impressive, and you are able to get more information here including seeing the video of the event.

There is one golden rule when it comes to SharePoint backups: In other words, if you make a backup of a site, you will be able to restore that site, and nothing but that site.

GEMBackup – SharePoint tool to Automate SharePoint Site Backups

The command line backup / restore routine in SharePoint environment whilst good does not offer any scheduling capability. There are of course products providing granular backup (e.g. DOCAVE) but this is geared to corporate site collections. This document describes the GEMBACKUP application, that can facilitiate the backup of the SharePoint environments and how to backup site collections using a tool I wrote that enumerates the sites and creates a backup batch file that can be scheduled using Windows Scheduler.

A great little template that can be used when working through a Disaster Recovery format for an organisation. – Excerp from the first paragraph: “It is proposed that each business unit be required to produce its own DRP, which will be integrated with the overall DRP managed by CEDRG. All recovery plans will need to take account of the role of the police in a disaster situation and make provision for a disaster occurring outside normal working hours.”

A good guide to Business Continuty Management is available for download. Business Continuity Management is a process driven from the top of the organisation. The first stage has to be an acceptance by the Board or the Executive Committee of the organisation that BCM is a valid approach to take.
